How to Handle Common Dental Emergencies in Kids
Toothache
Gently clean around the painful tooth and have your child rinse thoroughly with warm water. Try carefully flossing to check if food is stuck between the teeth. If the pain persists, contact our office. Avoid placing aspirin or heat directly on the gums or tooth. For facial swelling, use a cold compress and call us immediately.
Knocked Out Permanent Tooth
Locate the tooth and pick it up by the crown. Gently rinse the tooth with water, handling it as little as possible and avoiding touching the root. Do not scrub the tooth or use soap. If the tooth is intact, you can try to gently place it back in the tooth socket and have your child bite down on gauze to hold it there. If you’re not able to reinsert the tooth, store it in milk, saliva, or have your child hold it in their mouth next to their cheek. Contact our office immediately. Time is of the essence for saving the tooth!
Knocked Out Baby Tooth
Call our office for advice. In most cases, no immediate treatment will be required, but we’re happy to assess the situation and provide guidance.
Fractured or Chipped Permanent Tooth
Contact us as soon as possible. Quick action can save the tooth, prevent infection, and minimize the need for more extensive treatment. Have your child rinse their mouth with water and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. Bring any tooth fragments you can find to the appointment.
Fractured or Chipped Baby Tooth
Give us a call to determine whether immediate care is needed. Rinse your child’s mouth with water and apply a cold compress to control swelling. We’ll evaluate the situation and recommend next steps.
Severe Blow to the Head
Take your child to the nearest emergency room immediately. Head injuries require urgent medical attention. If your child sustained dental injuries too, give us a call once you’ve received the necessary medical care.
Possible Broken or Fractured Jaw
Go directly to the nearest emergency room. On the way there, have your child gently hold their jaw in place with their hands to stabilize it and prevent movement. Alternatively, you can wrap a bandage over the top of their head and under the jaw.
Cut or Bitten Lip, Cheek, or Tongue
Place gauze or a clean cloth over the injury and use firm but gentle pressure to manage bleeding. If your child has swelling, you can apply ice as well. Call your child’s doctor or visit the emergency room if the bleeding doesn’t stop.
